How to Use Discount Calculator – 3 Modes

Our Discount Calculator has 3 modes to cover all discount calculation needs:

  • Mode 2 – Find Original Price: Know the sale price and discount percentage → find what the original price was before discount.
  • Mode 3 – Find Discount %: Know original price and sale price → calculate what percentage discount was applied.

Use cases: online shopping discounts (Flipkart, Amazon), festive sales, restaurant bills, GST calculations, business pricing, and more.

Discount Formula – All 3 Calculations

1. Calculate Discounted Price:

Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount% / 100
Final Price = Original Price – Discount Amount

Example: ₹1,000 with 20% discount
Discount = 1,000 × 20/100 = ₹200
Final Price = 1,000 – 200 = ₹800

2. Find Original Price from Discounted Price:

Original Price = Sale Price / (1 – Discount%/100)

Example: Sale price ₹800, discount was 20%
Original = 800 / (1 – 0.20) = 800 / 0.80 = ₹1,000

3. Calculate Discount Percentage:

Discount% = (Original Price – Sale Price) / Original Price × 100

Example: Original ₹1,000, Sale price ₹750
Discount% = (1,000 – 750) / 1,000 × 100 = 250/1,000 × 100 = 25%

How to Calculate Double Discount (Successive Discounts)

Many sales offer double discounts like “20% + 10% off”. These are NOT the same as 30% off. Here is how to calculate:

Step 1: Apply first discount on original price
Step 2: Apply second discount on reduced price

Example: ₹1,000 with 20% + 10% discount
Step 1: ₹1,000 – 20% = ₹800
Step 2: ₹800 – 10% = ₹720
Total saved = ₹280 = 28% off (NOT 30%)

Formula: Net Discount% = D1 + D2 – (D1 × D2/100)
= 20 + 10 – (20×10/100) = 30 – 2 = 28%

Frequently Asked Questions – Discount Calculator

Discount% = (Original Price – Sale Price) / Original Price × 100. Example: MRP ₹1,000, Sale price ₹750. Discount% = (1000-750)/1000 × 100 = 25%. Use Mode 3 of our calculator above for instant results.
Final Price = Original Price × (1 – 20/100) = Original × 0.80. Example: ₹1,500 after 20% discount = 1,500 × 0.80 = ₹1,200. You save ₹300.
Original Price = Sale Price / (1 – Discount%/100). Example: Sale price ₹850, discount 15%. Original = 850 / (1 – 0.15) = 850 / 0.85 = ₹1,000. Use Mode 2 of our calculator above.
No! 20% + 10% successive discount = only 28% total discount, not 30%. The second discount applies to the already-reduced price. Formula: Net = D1 + D2 – (D1×D2/100) = 20+10-2 = 28%. Retailers use successive discounts to make offers appear higher than they are.
First remove GST from MRP using our GST Calculator, then apply discount on the base price. Or apply discount directly on MRP — the GST component reduces proportionally. Example: MRP ₹1,180 (includes 18% GST), 20% off = ₹944 final price.
